David Douglas, aka Grandad

Sadly our dear Dad, David, aka Grandad, passed away on Sunday 31st July after a short but courageous fight against Pancreatic cancer. Aged 82, David died peacefully on 31st July 2022 with his family and faithful spaniel Tom at his side.

Born and schooled in Kent, David started his career selling seeds for Dennes. When South Brockwells Farm became available he followed his dream to farm and he and his wife Sherry, Sarah and Chrissy moved to South Brockwells in September 1976 – in similar drought conditions to those we are experiencing now. The farm was very run down and required a huge amount of energy and investment to keep it going.

Over the years the need to diversify alongside the core business of the commercial sheep flock was essential. Planting the asparagus beds in 1998 was David’s idea. The Farm Shop opened in 2000, offering freshly cut asparagus and local oven ready game in season for which the shop is renowned. Having started in sales David always enjoyed working with customers and only stepped back from the shop in his late 70’s.

David was never happier than when he had a youngster with him, whether it be looking after the sheep or checking his pheasants. His boyish enthusiasm never left him and he always enjoyed seeing young people learn about the livestock and countryside around them. We always have a team of young people helping on the farm and with the start of South Brockwells Farm School we will continue our dear parents, David and Sherry's, legacy.

Tom, David’s faithful spaniel will stay with Sarah in Cuckfield, where he spent his last few weeks.

David’s funeral will take place on Friday 26th August at 2pm at St Michael and All Angels, Little Horsted and 4pm at Wealden Crematorium, Horam. Tea will be served at South Brockwells Farm -TN22 5QS, by David’s asparagus beds from 3.30 pm.

The family welcomes charitable donations to Song Bird Survival or Pancreatic Cancer UK as an expression of sympathy instead of flowers. Thank you.
